HEALING MEMORY
2022 video art installation. 15 min.
This project is the result of a collaboration with researcher and artist Isabella Haid as part of the experimental humanities laboratory of the Pelion Summer Lab.

It is an experiential shrine that consists of the projection of a 7-minute piece that collects images and videos of a kindergarten class in an abandoned municipal schoolhouse in the village of Makrinitsa in the region of Magnesia, Thessaly in Greece. The short fil features five personal stories of birth written and cultivated during a workshop using the Birth Story Narratives Moreno Method.

The same playroom is the site/sight of the experience, where visitors are invited to craft their first memories and play with the children’s toys during the screening, engaging with both distant and tactile memories of childhood.

These interactable objects do not leave the room after the screening ends, reflecting on how material forms, too, do not resist the passing of time. The birth narratives interrogate the ruination process that continues after birth: how the memory of birth is really felt, in some ways learned, and in many ways productive of a collective history.

Participants develop a kinship with the specters of the playroom: the children who once animated this school. As a shrine, the space reactivates a process of constructive memory which does not envision decay as a corrupting force, but dynamic and heartfelt.
